BUNGALOW PALM BAY
Margate, Kent, UK - 2024

INFORMATION

We entirely re-imagined what was once a small, tired and uninspiring post-war single story bungalow into a modern space for coastal living. Drawing on inspiration from the mid-century aesthetic, the home has been designed to create a restorative space for days spent by the sea.

The transformative nature of the ever changing light along the Margate coastline was the starting point. Early conversations explored the importance of light, space and maximising ocean views. The internal structure of the bungalow was converted with an entirely new, voluminous vaulted roof, clad internally with oak. Large skylights were introduced to new spaces to maximise natural light and the extension of the front facing corner window, complete with a large built-in day bed, allows for seamless ocean views and provides space for contemplation.

The design seeks to extensively overhaul the existing floor plan, with the addition of a large single story rear and side extension which houses three new bathrooms, enlarged kitchen and annex en-suite bedroom and sauna. By seamlessly connecting the existing brick bungalow with the new extension, the internal footprint has almost doubled. This also contributes to an interesting dialogue between the existing bungalow and the new architectural interventions, allowing for a complete transformation of the living experience.
